This battery is backwards compatible with the D50, D70/70s, and is used in the D80 and D200. So if you have any Nikon DSLR and want a second battery, you want to get this one so that when you upgrade your camera you can use the battery.

This battery has built-in circuitry that tells you the actual charge status of the battery, and it is accurate. This is a big deal; *if you are using the D200 or D80* it lets you know when your really do need to switch batteries or charge up. This is the first battery I've seen that is accurate in this regard. Kudos to Nikon. (This feature does not work in the D50/70/70s but the battery otherwise works fine).

5.0 out of 5 stars Negative reviews show lack of understanding..., June 1, 2006
By
This review is from: Nikon EN-EL3e Rechargeable Li-Ion Battery for D200, D300, D700 and D80 Digital SLR Cameras (Retail Packaging) (Electronics)
To begin with, if you're looking at this battery, you might have a D200. If so, you have no choice in the matter. Whether it's 1 star or 5, if you don't buy this battery you have a $1,700 paperweight (and yes, I'm the proud owner of a D200 in non-paperweight mode).

Second, the battery is not what's at fault here. The D200 is an energy monster. It sucks these poor little guys dry like a starved man at a all-you-can-eat. (This is the price of the incredible functionality offered by the D200. If you want longer bettery life, you'll have to give up MUCH of what makes the D200 the powerhouse it is.) The EL3e performs wonderfullly in the D70/50, providing slightly longer life than the recalled EL3a (the third contact on the EL3e is for the D200 only. The 70 & 50 both ignore it).

Bottom line: There is nothing wrong with this battery. If you have a D70 or D50, buy with the assurance it will take many, many shots on a single charge. If you have a D200, buy... Read more

4.0 out of 5 stars its a battery, August 21, 2006
By
This review is from: Nikon EN-EL3e Rechargeable Li-Ion Battery for D200, D300, D700 and D80 Digital SLR Cameras (Retail Packaging) (Electronics)
The new Nikon EN-EL3e battery is a slight update for the Nikon EN-EL3 provided with earlier dSLR models such as the D70. It adds a contact that allows new cameras to determine how much charge is left in the battery. The battery is grey to distinguish it from the black EN-EL3.

The EN-EL3e is backwards compatible with the EN-EL3: you can put it in your D70 or D50. The reverse is not true.

The number of pictures that the battery gives you depends on a lot of factors, including shooting style, LCD usage, and of course, camera. (The 2.5" LCD on the D200 will use up the battery much quicker than the smaller D70.) It is sufficient for a day of shooting. Unless you are using a D200 in some professional capacity, in which case, you'll probably be investing in at least one backup battery.

Don't buy this item unless you want a cheap, imitation battery. It is not a Canon battery and will not perform as it is advertised. I purchased this battery based upon the photograph which depicted the product as being a genuine Canon battery. I have two others, so I know what they look like. The product sent to me was an inexpensive imitation, not an original Canon Battery. In reading other reviews, I see that this seller made this substitution before. This is consumer fraud. I have attached a photo of the comparison between the original Canon battery which I own, and the substitution provided by this seller.

There is a first for everything! I just received a battery from Amazon as a seller (I paid $10 more assuming that Amazon wouldn't risk its reputation to sell Chinese junk) and I received a battery today. It arrived in a plastic baggie, scotchtaped with a hair on it. I compared it to the original battery that came with my camera and as you can see from uploaded pictures, obviously this one is a fake. For $44 bucks I can buy 10 fake ones on the "auction site". I'm so disappointed. It's going back.

I paid $56 for what I thought was an OEM battery (manufactured by Canon). The battery pack I received appeared to be genuine, except for the following characteristics:

1. The battery strength meter in the camera goes from fully charged (all bars) to a flashing red "change battery" icon with no reduction in bars. This is an indicator that the battery pack is not genuine Canon.
2. The battery pack only lasts ~200 pictures with flash (the OEM pack lasts something like 450).
3. The writing on the pack is blurry and not as dark as the OEM battery.
4. The seam of the case on my battery has some warbles at the seam; the OEM battery does not.

Caveat Emptor (buyer beware)!

I bough this to use with a Sony Alpha SLT-A55V, in addition to the one one bundled with the camera body. Lasts for aprox. 350-400 exposures without flash (mixed use between viewfinder and live view). Charges in about 4 hours I think.
The thing I liked the most is the apparently accurate reading of the battery charge level, which is very uniform, without surprises or flunctuations. Recommended.

These proprietary battery packs drive me nuts, expensive, single source, not interchangeable with other devices. But I have a Sony Alpha SLTA33L DSLR with Translucent Mirror Technology and 3D Sweep Panorama (Black) and it uses this battery, and the Sony a33 is a power hungry camera, so I bought this battery as a second for long days out shooting photos. Works, seems to be accurately metered by the camera on the amount of power left. Charges in about 4hrs after the first time. Recommended if you own the camera that needs this battery.

It's a Battery. It works and seems to work better than the off market brands. The Sony A55 is a big battery hog and drains the original battery after about 250shots. The spare works about the same. The generic that I have was only good for about 100 or so shots even though the specs were the same. In the case of the Sony A55 I think that I would stick with OEM battery on this camera.
